Tiffanie Violet

Through my artwork I explore the psychological shadow and the emotional states we often resist, suppress, or distract ourselves from. Working within an expressionist tradition, I use distortion, color, and gesture to give visible form to experiences that ordinarily remain internal.

 

Each portrait emerges through an intuitive process of discovery, developing organically through layers of acrylic paint, expressive line, texture, and saturated color. I allow the figure to develop before introducing black paint to define contours, deepen space, and reveal features, making black an active participant in the construction of the portrait rather than simply its background.

 

I am particularly drawn to uncomfortable states of mind such as fear, shame, contempt, longing, obsession, and grief that we are often conditioned to conceal or avoid. By bringing these experiences to the surface and giving them a face, my paintings create an opportunity for confrontation. The viewer is invited to remain with what might ordinarily be dismissed or escaped, and perhaps recognize something familiar within it.
